Kelleys Island: The Largest American Freshwater Island on Lake Erie
February 27, 2012
The largest American freshwater island on Lake Erie, Kelleys Island is an outdoorsman’s dream, with 600 acres of Ohio State Park land, 17 miles of beautiful coastline, miles and miles of nature and hiking trails, a fossil-filled quarry, wetlands and wildflowers. Located in the western basin of Lake Erie, the island’s scenery can be discovered by foot, bike, golf cart or kayak. Abundant waterfowl can be seen, making this a popular spot for birding enthusiasts, and each year in September, thousands of monarch butterflies visit the island to feast on milkweed before they head south to Mexico.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the island is home to historic homes and buildings, as well as the world-famous Glacial Grooves National Natural Landmark and Inscription Rock, where you’ll see centuries-old petroglyphs. Kelleys Island offers an array of activities and attractions for travelers of all ages and interests, from fantastic nature exploration opportunities and historic sites to fun shops, restaurants and more. Families will enjoy the sandy beach, a stone pier for fishing and a boat launch. Scuba enthusiasts like the island for the unique opportunity to dive documented shipwreck sites.
Stop by the local winery, explore island boutiques and gift shops or grab a treat at island eateries. Kelleys Island is sure to deliver a real taste of island life.
Transportation to the island is provided by the Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line – Marblehead (passenger and vehicle service), Goodtime I – Sandusky (offering a Daytime Island-Hopping Cruise and Party Cruise), Jet Express – Sandusky (a Catamaran-style, passenger only ferry), and Griffing Flying Service – Sandusky/Port Clinton.
