Science and History Tours of Gibraltar Island
Gibralter Island
Tours will be held each Wednesday, June 17 - August 19 from 11 am - 1 pm. A $10 tour fee supports Stone Lab student scholarships. To get to Gibraltar, meet at the Boardwalk Restaurant Harbor Taxi Landing on South Bass Island by 10:45 am to catch a water taxi at a cost of $6 round-trip. For an additional $10, participants can order a boxed lunch to enjoy after the tour. Orders must be placed when arriving on the island.

South Bass Island Lighthouse Tours

South Bass Island
Check out the view from the South Bass Island Lighthouse tower and learn about Lake Erie issues and the area's historical shipwrecks every Thursday through Sunday from 1 - 4 pm starting June 18. The final tours for the summer will be held Friday, August 21. Tickets are $2 per person to climb to the top of the lighthouse, free for children younger than six.

Enjoy a free lecture from baseball enthusiast Mel Marmer of Cincinnati at 12:30 pm then stay to experience baseball's history by watching the Squires play ball at 2 pm. You won't see gloves in use. Fielded balls are caught bare-handed, with an out being called even if the ball is caught after a bounce. Not only are the bats and ball very different from today's equipment, so are the rules of play.

The Bio Blitz will bring together scientists, naturalists, volunteers and the public to identify plants and animals within the Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve, Hoffman Forest MetroPark and Edison Woods MetroPark. Discover nature by being a scientist for a day and learn how protecting biodiversity benefits Lake Erie and your community. Scientists and naturalists will lead several hands-on programs for the public to assist with collection and identification of butterflies, small mammals, fish, snakes, turtles, plants, birds, owls and other nighttime creatures, snails, and earthworms throughout the event, including hikes and a guided canoe tour.

In 1978, Grease became "the word" with a popular feature-film adaptation starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as the lovelorn leads. A Broadway revival played from 1994-1998. This production will feature the smash Jacobs-Casey songs "Summer Nights," "Greased Lightning" and "We Go Together."
