Elmore Schedel Arboretum & Gardens 19255 W. Portage River South Rd. The lowland habitat provides shelter that offers ideal growing conditions for many species, which normally grow only at lower latitudes. Each year more than 15,000 annuals are transplanted from the greenhouse to the grounds. These plantings along with the many perennials, flowering trees and shrubs provide outstanding color from early spring to late fall. Huron DuPont Marsh State Nature Preserve River Rd. 419.625.7783 One of the best remaining riverine marshes in Ohio and is an excellent site for viewing wildlife. Periodically interpretive programs are scheduled and are open to the public. There is a short trail system through the woods and down to the marsh. Open daily 8am - dark. No drinking water and only seasonal restroom facilities are available. The preserve entrance and parking lot are located near the base of the Erie County water tower. Huron Harbor & Pier North Main St. Walking/fishing pier extending out into Lake Erie boasting many species of birds and wildlife. Great for viewing powerboats and sailboats coming into and out of the Huron river/lagoon area. Public area; no designated hours. James H. McBride Arboretum 901 Rye Beach Rd., Behind BGSU Firelands College 419.625.7783 Fifty-acre arboretum especially nice for weddings or nature walks, surrounded with trees, flowers, a pond, and a bridge. Old Woman Creek State Nature Preserve 2514 Cleveland Rd. E (US 6) 419.433.4601 A National Estuarine Research Reserve and State Nature Preserve. This 571-acre reserve is one of Ohio's best remaining examples of a natural estuary. The estuary serves as a field laboratory where scientists can study this naturally functioning system where land and water joins. Large parking area, paved trail, restrooms, drinking fountain, checklist, and observation area. Trail open daily dawn-dusk. Visitor center open Wed-Sun, 1-5pm; closed Mon and Tue. Gift shop open Sat and Sun 1-5pm. Whenever the entrance gates are open, public is welcome. Osborn Park 3910 Perkins Ave. 419.625.7783 163 acre property offering hiking, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, playground, lectures, two ball fields, picnic shelters, grills, walking trail, fourteen soccer fields, wooded nature trails, small fishing pond, drinking fountain, and rest rooms. Meeting rooms available. Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve 2715 Cleveland Rd. W (US 6) 419.433.4919 This area, with its contiguous wetlands, comprises some of the last remaining undeveloped stretches of shoreline in the Sandusky Bay region. Known to attract nearly 300 bird species and beautiful wildflowers, spring is one of the best times to visit! Summer finds great blue herons, red tail hawks, woodcocks, great horned owls, wood ducks and numerous songbirds. Open daily, dawn to dusk. Paved trail; birding checklist. Kelleys Island Kelleys Island State Park 419.746.2546 Hiking trails, camping, launch ramp, fishing, summer programs, and picnic shelter and swimming beach. Open year-round. North Pond State Nature Preserve & North Shore Alvar State Nature Preserve 419.746.2546 The North Pond contains a variety of rare and endangered plants and animals. Consisting of approximately 20 acres of pristine wetlands with the estuary leading into Lake Erie at the North Bay, the pond is also home to a diverse bird population and migration area. North Pond represents one of the best/last natural marshes in Ohio’s western Lake Erie basin. The North Shore Alvar is the only undisturbed alvar community in Ohio. An alvar is bare rock such as limestone bedrock with unique plant life growing on and between the rock surfaces. The scouring motion of the waves and ice off Lake Erie maintains the alvar. Access to this preserve requires a permit, except during the month of May. Galpin Memorial Sanctuary South on Edison Dr., off of SR 113 26-acre forest with hiking trails to explore the cove and valley drained by the village creek. Oak Harbor Black Swamp Bird Observatory 13551 W SR 2 bsbobird.org Located in the heart of the Lake Erie Marsh Region, the Black Swamp Bird Observatory was founded in August 1992. An independent non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife research, conservation and educational programs for the public. The refuge has nine miles of hiking trails through a variety of habitats including marshes, grasslands and wooded areas.
