Lake Erie Shores & Islands End of Summer Checklist
August 06, 2018
Don’t let summer pass you by! School will be starting in just a few weeks, but there’s still plenty of summer fun to be had. Here are 5 things you need to experience at Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islands before the end of summer:
Get to an Island – Summer in the islands can’t be beat! Picture yourself toes in the sand, drink in your hand or watching boats float in and out of the harbor while dining on fresh lake perch and walleye. Water activities are plentiful before Labor Day as well, including kayak and Jet Ski rentals, sailing excursions, and parasailing trips. Some key island events take place prior to the end of summer also. Consider a visit to Kelleys Island for the Kelleys Island Homecoming Festival August 10-11. Head over to Put-in-Bay for Island Green Week August 4-11, Perry’s Birthday Celebration August 25-26, or Bash on the Bay featuring Rascal Flatts August 30.
Ride Steel Vengeance – Have you made it to Cedar Point this summer? If you haven’t had a chance to ride the newest, record-breaking coaster Steel Vengeance, you have got to get there for its inaugural season. Debuting just a few months ago, this steel and wood monster is the tallest, fastest, and longest hybrid coaster in the world! The wildest ride Cedar Point has ever built includes multiple airtime hills, twists and dives, overbanked turns, and surprise maneuvers. Don’t miss the Cedar Point Nights beach parties through August 19, Boardwalk Cruiser Wine Tours (available by reservation) through August 19, and the “Last Blast of Summer” Ohio versus Michigan Food Truck Challenge, August 24-26 and August 31-September 3.
Tackle a Trail – Ohio has a number of “trails” which are being promoted by Ohio Tourism this year. If you’re looking for a fun way to finish up summer, consider exploring one of these trails. Experience a thrill-seekers dream with the Lake Erie Shores & Islands Thrills Trail. Eat your way across an island with the Put-in-Bay Foodie Trail – you can even earn a free gift by visiting a specified number of businesses. There’s also a Shores & Islands Wine Trail and a number of Lake Erie island and coastal water trails to explore via kayak or canoe.
Hit the Beach – Beach days are the best part of summer. The beaches of Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islands are plentiful! Don’t want to haul all your stuff to the lake? Some area beaches, including Nickel Plate Beach in Huron and Main Street Beach in Vermilion, offer beach rentals such as lounge chairs, shade umbrellas, and water toys. Not looking to spend a full day? Even a leisurely sunset stroll or a morning of gathering beach glass can calm your senses and make you a lake lover. Find your ultimate beach!
I Scream, You Scream – We all scream for ice cream! There is not a more quintessential summer snack than the creamy frozen dairy delicacy. From soft-serve to hand-scooped, milkshakes, or sundaes, Lake Erie Shores & Islands has a bunch of fantastic locations where you can quench your desire for this sweet treat. Saddle up to the soda fountain at Big Ed’s Soda Grill, feed your Italian side at Brown Dog Gelato Co., or give in to your cravings with generous portions at Toft Dairy (we recommend the Lake Erie Cookie Island Monster!)
Plenty of summer adventures still await you at Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islands. Check out our events calendar for upcoming festivals and fun activities to close out the season.
