Harvest Time in Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islands
October 12, 2018
It’s officially fall in Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islands and for many in the agricultural community that means it’s harvest time! For you, it means access to the freshest fall produce at farm stands and farmer’s markets, pick-your-own apples and pumpkins, the smells of grapes ripening on the vines, and a variety of fall and harvest celebrations for the whole family.
With the fertile farm lands in the Shores & Islands region, roadside farm stands and farm markets are plentiful. Contact the Lake Erie Shores & Islands Welcome Center for a complete listing of markets by location. Seasonal pop-up markets continue in many communities, including Huron, Oak Harbor, Sandusky, Marblehead, and Vermilion. At these one- or two-day markets you’ll find not only fresh produce, but other local products such as honey, organic skin care, baked goods, and sometimes there are food trucks. These pop-up markets occur on specific dates – check our calendar of events for times and locations.
Apples are the fruit of autumn! Gather your kids or friends together and enjoy a couple of hours wandering through an apple orchard and picking a number of green, yellow, and red apple varieties directly off the tree and into your bag or basket. Kids love seeing where the fruit comes from and apple-picking makes for fantastic photo-ops. And autumn isn’t complete without gathering pumpkins from the patch for your baking, decorating, and carving needs. You can pick apples at A.B. Phillips & Sons, Burnham Orchards, and Quarry Hill Orchards in Berlin Heights; Bergman Orchards in Marblehead and Port Clinton; and Miller’s Apple Hill in Amherst. You can also pick pumpkins at Burnham’s, Quarry Hill, and Miller’s.
Autumn is the ideal season to visit a winery – grape varieties are being harvested and fermented to create delicious reds, whites, and rosés. A number of area wineries offer tours where you can learn about the process from vine to bottle. Or, take a walk through a vineyard enjoying the crisp autumn air and then cozy up next to a fire with your favorite vino. You could also choose a tasting flight to sample a couple different styles. The Lake Erie Shores & Islands Wine Trail offers more than a dozen winery options for your touring and tasting pleasure.
‘Tis the season for all kinds of harvest celebrations – everything from family-friendly fun, to wine and beer bonanzas!
