Don't Miss the Boat - Dragons & Bacon Fest 2019

Don't Miss the Boat - Dragons & Bacon Fest 2019

For the third year in a row, the Sandusky waterfront is hosting a unique and fun festival, full of food, music, fun, and dragons. Dragons?

Dragon boats, to be more precise. A dragon boat is a boat of traditional Chinese design, typically decorated to resemble a dragon, propelled with paddles by a large crew and used for racing. These 40-foot dragon boats will be piloted by teams of 20 paddlers, a drummer, and a steer person. Each boat represents either a corporate, community, club, or friends & family team, plus there are usually a few club teams from outside the area that also come to compete. Races take place in Sandusky Bay with Cedar Point as an amazing back drop. Races can be viewed from the Paper District Marina, where a fun and festive atmosphere is set up.

The Dragons & Bacon Fest is Saturday, September 14 from 8 am-4 pm. Live music will entertain festival-goers and race participants throughout the day. Vendors will also be on-hand with event merchandise and more. A fun twist to the event is the showcasing of bacon dishes from food and beverage vendors. So, if you’re afraid of dragons, come for the bacon and watch the fun!

These bacon dishes will be available for your tasting pleasure: Mac & Cheese Grilled Cheese with Bacon (Heavy G’s), Maple Bacon Cookie Dough (Doughin’ Crazy), Maple Bacon Funnel Cake (Funnel Cake), Loaded Bacon Nachos (Made in the Shade Concessions), Bacon Lovers Pizza (Cameo Pizza Food Truck), Candied Bacon (Barra), and the onsite Dockside Café will be featuring Loaded Bacon & Queso Fries along with Bacon Bloody Mary’s! Drooling yet?

More than 15 teams competed in 2018 and each team is guaranteed at least three races, so the action lasts all afternoon until the Dragons & Bacon Fest Champion is crowned! The one-day festival is being presented through a partnership with the City of Sandusky Recreation Department and Lake Erie Shores & Islands. The charitable benefactor from this years’ event is Sandusky Junior Sailors, Inc.

Sandusky Junior Sailors operate sailing lessons for students age 7-17 out of the Sandusky Sailing Club. Week-long sessions take place from June-August. The youth-oriented group will benefit from beer tent sales and a number of raffles held throughout the day.

Enjoy Sandusky’s beautiful waterfront, while cheering on the teams and noshing on some tasty bacon! Paddles up, bacon down!
