Soak Up Every Last Bit of Summer in Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islands

Soak Up Every Last Bit of Summer in Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islands

While school is starting in most of the Midwest, nobody told Mother Nature that summer is supposed to end. With gorgeous sunny days and seasonably warm weather, now is the time to soak up every last bit of summer. Here are some ways to make the most of the season.

Hit the beach

If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit a Lake Erie beach yet this summer, now is the time to get there. With fewer crowds, the beach is the perfect place to socially distance while basking in the sun, frolicking in the waves, or actively exploring the shore. The beach can be a quiet place to relax and read, while enjoying the sounds of the lake lapping the sand. Or, grab a bucket and a small shovel and go on the hunt for rare beach glass. If you’ve still got kids at home, let them enjoy playing in the sand or skipping rocks in the lake. Not sure where to go? Check out the top 6 beaches in the region.

Cool off at a water park

Yes, you can visit an indoor water park right now. Both Kalahari Resorts & Conventions and Great Wolf Lodge are following state and local health department directives and instituting above-and-beyond safety and cleanliness protocols. Both water parks offer day passes, but the experience is that much greater when you spend the night. Check out the Wellness Initiatives at Kalahari Resorts & Conventions to see what to expect from a visit there. Great Wolf Lodge has instituted the Paw Pledge to keep you safe while you play. With a variety of slides and pools to swim and play, there’s something for everyone.

Get out on the lake

It’s not too late to enjoy the bounty of Lake Erie and the water activities it provides. From the excitement of parasailing or bouncing among the waters on a jet ski, to the serene relaxation that comes from floating along on a kayak or stand up paddleboard and the thrill received when you reel in a big fish. Explore some ways to get out on the water.

Put an island in your life

Just because the summer season is winding down, does not mean the islands are shutting down. Late summer and fall are a great time to enjoy the small-town atmosphere and amazing sightseeing opportunities at Kelleys Island and Put-in-Bay. Visit the islands where you can scoot around on a golf cart or peddle the quiet streets on a bike. Stroll the parks and hiking trails. Shop the island retailers full of unique finds and end-of-season sales. Enjoy dining at an outdoor patio, where you can enjoy the fresh air and a delicious meal. Visit wineries and breweries for a taste of the region through craft beverages. Overnight accommodations are bargain priced for weekday visits, while weekends invite several upcoming special island-wide celebrations. For true serenity, plan a trip to Middle Bass Island or rent the four-bedroom lodge on North Bass Island (private transportation required).

Enhance your education

Already got kids back in school or doing your learning virtually this year? This region is full of educational opportunities to enhance your lessons, from science to history and everything in between.
