Play Ball! Again in Huron

Play Ball! Again in Huron

The ping of aluminum bats, the scuffle of cleats kicking up dust on the infield, the pop of a ball stretching the webbing of a kid’s glove — all can be heard & seen at Fabens Park in Huron this summer!

Fabens Park has joined other sport venues in Lake Erie Shores & Islands to become one of the first in Ohio to allow baseball games to return after months of lying dormant under the coronavirus pandemic quarantine. To date, Fabens Park has hosted the 4th Annual Showcase Baseball Tournament (June 5-7), the Erie County Slam Baseball Tournament (June 12-14), and the Touch ‘Em All Baseball Tournament (June 19-21). Combined these sporting events have produced the following:

- Nearly 220 teams have traveled to Fabens Park from various parts of Ohio, Michigan, and Pennsylvania
- Attracted over 6,000 tournament spectators to visit the Lake Erie Shores & Islands region
- Estimated that 53% of the tournament visitors have stayed overnight during these weekends

The City of Huron has gone to bat for teams to make sure precautions are being taken due to COVID-19. Plans and protocols with event organizers, the City of Huron, and Erie County Health Department assured that tournaments are following as closely as possible with the Responsible RestartOhio Baseball/Softball Guidelines. Banners and signs are located throughout the facility to encourage social distancing among players, coaches, and spectators. Fabens Park offers plenty of room for parents to sit on the outskirts of the field to watch games from a distance, while other families still had the opportunity to sit closer to the baseball diamond in small groups.

Fabens Park, which includes 9 baseball/softball fields, will continue to play host to several more large tournaments this summer including:

• Sandlot Smash (June 27-28)
• Duck Pond Classic Baseball Tournament (July 10-12)
• 20th Annual Dawg Daze Softball Tournament (July 31-August 2)

Responsible Restart at Sports Force Parks

Responsible Restart at Sports Force Parks

On May 30, Sports Force Parks became one of the first sport venues in Ohio to welcome back baseball with the Salute to the Season tournament with youth players traveling from various parts of Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and New Jersey.

A top priority at Sports Force Parks is to provide a safe environment for athletes, coaches, and families visiting, as well as their team members and the Lake Erie Shores & Islands community. Sports Force Parks went through a thoughtful and methodical process before moving forward with re-opening their gates this year. While at the facility, Sports Force Parks encouraged all guests to practice safe distancing and proper hygiene at all times. Safety guidelines are posted throughout the venue with the number six to keep in mind. The 6-foot social distancing zone for athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators is one of the mandatory rules laid out by the Ohio Department of Health. Some other mandatory rules include no team water coolers, no handshake lines, no spitting sunflower seeds, and sanitizing dugouts between each game. Adherence to these guidelines were and will be vital to maintaining a safe environment for everyone in attendance.

Sports Force Parks features nine multi-purpose, synthetic turf fields to accommodate soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse, and football. The team has been working to create additional tournaments and unique opportunities for athletes to participate in their favorite sports. These events include:

• Extended the summer season to run through August by adding two new baseball events: Rust Belt Rumble ׀ Can O’Corn Tournament
• Sandusky Bay Collegiate Summer League for graduating HS seniors and current college baseball players in late June
• 7v7 HS Football Clash at the Point in July
• SFP High School Football Showcase in July
