Island Sports Getaway at Put-in-Bay
In Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islands, sits South Bass Island, home to the village of Put-in-Bay. Accessible by a short ferry ride, visitors come for a wide variety of activities for the entire family. Most tour the island by bicycle or golf cart. When the sun goes down Put-in-Bay lights up with exciting nightlife; dozens of restaurants and pubs offer a wide selection to please every taste and budget. However there’s also a tradition of sports on the island and Put-in-Bay growing into one of the most popular and unique sites for organizers who are seeking to host outdoor events.
Earlier this month the Lake Erie Islands Browns Backers capped off the sports season on the island with the Draft Day 5K. This event, which is traditionally hosted in April to coincide with the NFL Draft, was re-scheduled to October due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Event organizers were able to plan this event with 100 runners to start the race/walk at appropriate social distance stages. Competitors awaited the individual start signal and raced through the streets of Put-in-Bay with the scenic Lake Erie coastal backdrop. The 7th Annual Draft Day 5K is set to take place on April 24, 2021. If you enjoy 5K’s and need a reason to come back to Put-in-Bay, there’s Pyrate Run for Stein Hospice on June 27, 2021 and the Miller Ferry 5K on September 18, 2021.
Each summer, the several open grass fields on the island, such as McCann Field, plays host to large amateur athletic tournaments. Co-ed soccer teams from all over the country and Canada converge to the island to compete in the legendary 6v6 Soccer Put-in-Bay Cup. The weekend soccer event can draw close to 100 teams at all experience levels! Players come back year after year to compete in this fun, competitive, and unique tournament atmosphere. This tournament series is set to return to Put-in-Bay during the weekend of July 11-12, 2021. Register your team at 6v6Soccer.
For over the last two decades, as many as 2,600 competitors return to the island each August for the Battle of Put-in-Bay Volleyball Tournament. McCann Field and the softball fields at Put-in-Bay School are converted into grass volleyball courts to host this large multi-class tournament.
The Put-in-Bay Road Races will return on September 21-24, 2021 and offers vintage racing enthusiasts an opportunity to take a trip back in time. The event is a celebration of the island’s rich road racing history, and typically includes a one-day car show followed by two-days of racing at the Put-in-Bay Airport. Back in the mid- to late 1950s, Put-in-Bay hosted road races along island roads still used by the public today. It is one of a few places where many of the same roads used as tracks for the races from more than half a century ago are still around and available for drivers.
The Bay Week sailing event is the oldest and one of the most prestigious sailing competitions on all the Great Lakes. For over 100 years, the I-LYA Regatta Week has been a proving ground for the most able and skilled sailors and the fastest of boats from the cradle of America sailing history. Based at the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, each year the regattas feature sleek sailing and powerboat vessels engaging in highly competitive races by class around the Lake Erie Islands. In 2021, the Junior Sailing Bay Week will take place from July 18-22 and the Senior Sailing Bay Week is July 29-August 1.
As winter approaches, quieter times have now arrived at Put-in-Bay. However planning for 2021 has already started and event calendars are being filled. Put-in-Bay is proud to host so many unique events and welcomes all athletes to come for a sports getaway experience that can be found nowhere else. The island awaits you!
