Where the World Comes to Play Shuffleboard...And More!!!
For more than 145 years, Lakeside Chautauqua has welcomed families to the Lake Erie Shores & Islands region to participate in a summer Chautauqua experience dedicated to nurturing mind, body, and spirit. My recent visit was punctuated by the rhythmic smacking of heavy plastic discs against each other and the intermittent eruption of cheers from parents as they watched over 50 boys & girls competing in the Lary Faris National Junior Singles Shuffleboard Tournament. Nestled in central Lakeside, the 26-court, outdoor facility provides shuffleboard opportunities for groups of all sizes and ages. Originally built in 1928, the courts are neatly cared for, and glass beads are applied weekly for the best shuffleboard experience. Awnings are built over the courts for shade on hot summer days. Each year the venue plays host to several large tournaments such as the Ohio State Amateur Doubles Shuffleboard Tournament and National Doubles Shuffleboard Tournament.
While shuffleboard is a long-standing tradition at Lakeside, the Chautauqua community is quickly becoming a hub of many other outdoor sports. The Lakeside tennis facilities feature ten tennis courts of three different surfaces. At the Williams Tennis Campus there are three fast-drying HarTru courts, two natural clay courts and two hard courts. Three additional hard courts are located along the lakefront. The newly-built Hubbard Pickleball Center, adjacent to the tennis courts, provides eight courts dedicated to this growing popular sport. Facility upgrades also include redesigned outdoor basketball courts and a sand volleyball court, creating a unique setting that is perfect to host weekend tournaments.
Lakeside is also home to a 700-foot dock stretching out over the open waters of Lake Erie! Lakeside has the ability to host numerous water sporting activities and events such as sailing regattas, kayaking, open water swimming, paddle boarding, and fishing. Trails, walkways, and private roads extend from the dock that follows along the lakefront for a scenic backdrop for various 5K running events, such as the annual Raccoon Run.
Throughout this summer, Lakeside took many necessary steps to safely welcome guests back into their community due to COVID-19. While issuing numerous new cleanliness and wellness procedures, Lakeside also displayed QR codes at various locations to allow guests to efficiently schedule usage at their courts, fitness room, and outdoor pool. This scheduling feature allowed for adequate social distancing among participants and a safe way to return to playing. The implementation of all their new procedures ensured that guests have a safe, fun and memorable visit to Lakeside Chautauqua.
