Cheers! A Fun New Way to Explore Wineries, Breweries, and Distilleries

May 23, 2019

Recently on the blog we told you how you can “hit the trails” in Ohio’s Lake Erie Shores & Islands – even if you’re not particularly into hiking. That’s because the region boasts a number of unique “trails,” tying local sites and businesses together based on common themes or interests. For example, thrill-seekers love looking for the next over-the-top adventure on the Lake Erie Shores & Islands Thrills Trail. Those who enjoy a variety of culinary pursuits and have a big love for dining, can’t get enough of the Put-in-Bay Foodie Trail.

Another trail recently debuted, and this one offers a reward to those who complete it! Raise a glass to the all-new Cheers Trail! With 18 unique stops featuring either wine, beer, or spirits, plus options for tours, this new trail offers a unique way to taste your way through the region.

The Lake Erie Shores & Islands region is well-known as a viticulture stop with a number of historic wineries and newer, modern tasting rooms. The rise in popularity in recent years of local craft beers has allowed for breweries to launch their own facilities.  Producers of spirits and hard ciders are on the cusp of the next great locally-crafted beverage trend. Follow the Cheers Trail and experience all of the unique flavors and diverse participants.

Get started by picking up the official trail brochure at one of the Lake Erie Shores & Islands welcome centers, located in Sandusky and Port Clinton, at one of the participating locations, or download it online. Make a qualifying purchase at any of the locations and ask your server for their Cheers Trail sticker, to be placed on your brochure. Once you have visited and received stickers from five or more locations, you can claim a free gift from one of the welcome centers! If you complete the trail by visiting all 18 locations, you will be entered into a drawing for a Lake Erie Shores & Islands getaway, which will be awarded annually in March, drawing from all the entries received in the previous year.

We want you to sip responsibly! There is no need to complete the trail all at once – we recommend spreading out your visits. One fun way to partake in the Cheers Trail in a responsible manner is to utilize one of the area’s guided wine tours offered through Scarlet Transportation or Sawmill Creek Resort. These tour companies offer customized tours with professional drivers – also a great way to partake as a group! Another unique way to enjoy a variety of area drinks is on the water with Goodtime Lake Erie Cruises. They offer a variety of special event cruises including wine-tasting and bourbon-tasting excursions. Of course, you must be at least 21 years old (legal drinking age in Ohio) to participate. If you are not utilizing a tour service and choose to visit multiple locations in one day, please designate a driver.

When you make the decision to purchase locally-made, craft beverages, you are choosing to support the local economy. Each maker on the Cheers Trail is a small business located in the Lake Erie Shores & Islands region. As with any small business, these beverage makers are essential to the local economy. They support local employment and bring people to the region to explore everything it has to offer.

Cheers to that!
