Island adventure takes a family-friendly turn on Put-in-Bay, where cave tours, butterflies, playgrounds, carousel rides, local history, golf carts, and Lake Erie views fill the day with easy fun. This itinerary helps families explore South Bass Island at a playful pace, with plenty of stops for snacks, stories, discoveries, and sunset memories.


Morning - Sweet Start & Island Energy

  • Begin your day with a filling breakfast at Pasquale’s Cafe in downtown Put-in-Bay. Savor fluffy pancakes or fresh omelets, perfect for fueling family fun. 

  • Next, hop aboard the Put-in-Bay Tour Train, located right downtown, for a breezy island adventure! This open-air tram takes you on a narrated tour of the island’s top sights, from historic landmarks to scenic shoreline views. Kids will love the ride and the chance to wave at people along the route, while adults can sit back and enjoy the stories and scenery. The train conveniently stops near several popular attractions, making it the perfect way to get around without the hassle.

  • Venture to Perry’s Cave for a cool underground adventure. Explore the historic cave where Commodore Perry once sought refuge, and let the echoes of its history spark imaginative tales as you descend. Then, head next door to the Butterfly House, where vibrant butterflies flutter amid lush gardens in this 4,000-square-foot aviary. Let the kids marvel at the colorful wings of over 50 species of butterflies from around the globe.

  • Grab some ice cream or a quick bite at Dan Dee’s Snack Shack, then hop on your golf cart or the Put-in-Bay Tour Train and visit the Lake Erie Islands Nature & Wildlife Center to discover local wildlife and interactive exhibits. The kids will love the hands-on nature displays and let curiosity take over! Touch real animal fur, dip for pond critters, and follow the butterfly trail. Kids will love the interactive exhibits and short nature walk - perfect for stretching legs and sparking “wow” moments. A hidden gem for little explorers! 

Lunch - Island Eats and Frozen Treats 

  • Ready for lunch? Head downtown and refuel at Dairy Isle; a cheerful, family-run spot that's equal parts nostalgic ice cream parlor and casual eatery perfectly blending quick, affordable bites with over-the-top frozen treats. Offering up a family-friendly selection of burgers, fries, walking tacos, corn dogs, chicken tenders, hot dogs, and even veggie burgers!

Afternoon - Playground, Carousel, Heroic History & Island Shopping  

  • After a tasty lunch at Diary Isle, stroll to DeRivera Park - the island’s sunny waterfront playground! Let the kids burn off energy on swings, slides, and climbing bars while adults can relax on a bench with Lake Erie views. Next, hop over to Kimberly’s Carousel for a whimsical ride on hand-carved horses, its colorful spins adding a joyful soundtrack to your day. Spend some time browsing nearby shops for souvenirs or a sweet treat. 

  • Who says you can’t learn while still having fun? Stop by the Visitor Center at Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial, where history comes to life! Families can explore engaging exhibits about the War of 1812, the Battle of Lake Erie, and Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s naval triumph, learning how this victory helped secure lasting peace between nations. It’s a fascinating and interactive way to connect kids with history.

Dinner - with a Lake Erie View 

  • Grab some tasty grub at The Boardwalk for a family feast with Lake Erie views. The Boardwalk is a lively waterfront destination where diners can choose from several concessions, each catering to different tastes. Enjoy local fare such as Lake Erie perch and walleye baskets and sandwiches. Choose from the freshest seafood like pink shrimp, lobsters, king crab, and of course their famous lobster bisque. For more kid-friendly options, try the burgers, chicken tenders, fries, and tacos. 

 

Evening - Golf Cart and Story Walk  

  • No trip to Put-in-Bay is complete without riding in a golf cart! Several rentals are available by the hour, half-day, or full-day. Hop on a golf cart and venture to the southern end of the island to Dodge Woods Nature Preserve. Located at the corner of Langram and Thompson rds., StoryWalk® Trail at Dodge Woods offers a fun twist on reading and nature! Follow the 852-foot trail, where 17 storyboards display pages from a children’s book. Read aloud together as you stroll - perfect for kids and grown-ups to enjoy stories and sunshine at the same time!

  • Before wrapping up your island adventure, take a little extra time to cruise around the island by golf cart. Discover quiet backroads lined with cottages, peek at hidden coves along the shoreline, or stop to watch boats drift by the harbor. As the day winds down, find a lakeside spot to enjoy a beautiful Lake Erie sunset, painting the sky in soft pinks and golds - a picture-perfect end to your island adventure.
